Best Road Trip Routes from Ahmedabad You Have Probably Not Tried

Ahmedabad sits at the center of Gujarat's road network, making it an ideal starting point for weekend getaways and extended road trips. While most travelers head straight to Gir National Park or the Somnath temple circuit, there are several lesser-known routes that offer equally rewarding experiences with better road conditions and fewer crowds.

1. Ahmedabad to Champaner-Pavagadh (150 km)

This UNESCO World Heritage Site combines history, architecture, and a moderate trek. The drive takes about 2.5 hours via NH48 and SH87. The roads are well-maintained, and you'll pass through rural Gujarat with its characteristic step wells and small towns.

What makes this route special is the variety: you start with the archaeological park at Champaner, explore 15th-century mosques and palaces, then climb Pavagadh hill (either by ropeway or on foot) to reach the Kalika Mata temple at the summit.

Best time: October to February. Avoid summer months as the climb can be exhausting in heat.

Vehicle recommendation: Any sedan or hatchback works fine. The roads are good throughout.

2. Ahmedabad to Modhera and Patan (110 km)

This route takes you to two architectural gems in North Gujarat. Modhera Sun Temple, built in 1026 CE, is one of India's finest examples of temple architecture. The intricate carvings and the stepped tank (kund) are worth the trip alone.

From Modhera, it's a short 30 km drive to Patan, home to the Rani ki Vav stepwell (another UNESCO site) and the famous Patola silk weaving tradition. The entire circuit can be done comfortably in a day.

Road conditions: Excellent. NH68 and SH10 are smooth and well-marked.

Tip: Start early to catch the morning light at Modhera. The temple faces east and looks stunning at sunrise.

3. Ahmedabad to Thol Lake and Viramgam (50 km)

For a quick half-day escape, this route offers birdwatching at Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary followed by a visit to Viramgam's salt pans. Between November and February, Thol attracts migratory birds including flamingos, pelicans, and various species of ducks.

The drive is short but scenic, especially during monsoon when the surrounding farmland is lush green. This is ideal if you want to test a newly rented vehicle or just need a break from the city without committing to a full day.

4. Ahmedabad to Nalsarovar (65 km)

Nalsarovar is Gujarat's largest natural lake and a designated bird sanctuary. The route via Sanand and Viramgam is straightforward, and the lake itself offers boat rides where you can spot over 200 species of birds.

Unlike Thol, Nalsarovar is more developed for tourism with better facilities. You can rent boats, have lunch at lakeside dhabas, and spend a relaxed day without much planning.

Best season: November to February for migratory birds.

5. Ahmedabad to Lothal and Dholavira (Circuit)

For history enthusiasts, this route covers two major Indus Valley Civilization sites. Lothal is closer (80 km) and can be done as a day trip. Dholavira requires more commitment—it's 400 km away in the Rann of Kutch region—but the drive through rural Kutch is an experience in itself.

If you're doing both, plan for at least 3 days: Day 1 to reach Dholavira, Day 2 to explore and return partway, Day 3 to stop at Lothal on the way back to Ahmedabad.

Vehicle: SUV or sedan with good ground clearance recommended for Dholavira, especially during monsoon.

Practical Tips for Road Trips from Ahmedabad

  • Fuel: Fill up in Ahmedabad. While most routes have petrol pumps, they can be sparse in rural areas.
  • Food: Highway dhabas are reliable for vegetarian meals. Carry snacks and water for shorter routes.
  • Booking: For weekend trips, book your vehicle on Gadiyo at least 2-3 days in advance. Last-minute availability can be limited during peak season.
  • Timing: Start early (6-7 AM) to avoid city traffic and make the most of your day.

These routes offer a mix of culture, nature, and history without the crowds you'd encounter at more popular destinations. Each can be done as a day trip or extended into a weekend getaway depending on your pace and interests.
